Grants are awarded on a competitive basis to bring the highest-quality artistic and cultural services to Los Angeles residents and visitors. Since 1990 the Department of Cultural Affairs has awarded more than $65 million to local artists, arts organizations, and arts events. In 2016–17 the department will offer more than $3 million in project support to more than 275 local artists and organizations through its Cultural Grant Program.

C.O.L.A. Individual Artist Fellowships
Each C.O.L.A. grant recipient was offered support to create new work that is showcased in a nonthematic group presentation series. This annual event greatly benefits general audiences and honors a selection of established and creative artists who live and work in Los Angeles.
